Why Robbie Is Part of This Story

When I created UDL With Cindy, I knew Robbie would be part of it.

He was my son, but he was also one of my greatest teachers. His experiences shaped how I think about children, learning, inclusion, and the importance of looking beyond what a child may be struggling with to see who they are and what they can do.

As both a parent and an educator, I learned that the right support can make an enormous difference. Children need adults who notice their strengths, understand that learning can look different from one child to another, and are willing to adjust the environment rather than expecting every child to fit the same mold.

This is one reason Universal Design for Learning means so much to me. UDL asks us to plan for differences from the beginning—to provide multiple ways for children to participate, communicate, learn, and show what they know.

We lost Robbie to cancer, and I continue this work in his memory. Sharing practical ideas that help children feel supported, included, and successful is one way I can carry his story forward.

I hope this website can be a place where educators and families find practical strategies, encouragement, and perhaps an idea that makes something a little easier for a child.

Small changes really can make a big difference.
