DIY Slant Board

A slant board is a simple angled writing surface that can make handwriting more comfortable and successful for many young children. Bringing the paper closer to eye level encourages better posture, reduces neck strain, and supports smoother visual tracking across the page.

This DIY version uses a 3-ring binder, Velcro, and a clipboard so you can create multiple slant boards for just a few dollars each.

What You’ll Need

  • 3-ring binder (2″ or 3″ works best)
  • Clipboard
  • Velcro strips (hook and loop)

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Gather a 3-ring binder, a clipboard, and Velcro strips. A 2″ or 3″ binder works best to create a helpful writing angle for young children. Make sure your clipboard is roughly the same width as your binder so it feels stable and secure when students lean on it during writing or drawing.

Step 2: Attach Velcro to the Binder

Attach soft Velcro to all 4 sides of the binder so the clipboard can be placed horizontally or vertically.

Step 3: Attach Velcro to the Clipboard

Attach the rough Velcro to the back of the clipboard in the corresponding positions so it lines up with the Velcro on the binder.
Press firmly to create a secure connection.

Step 4: Put It Together

The clipboard should sit securely at an angle on top of the binder, creating a comfortable surface for writing, drawing, or tracing.

This slant board can be used for writing, drawing, or any tabletop task. This flexible, UDL-friendly tool quietly supports a wide range of learners without singling anyone out.
