Creating Sensory Bins

Sensory bins are a simple, hands-on way to encourage exploration, play, and learning. By changing the materials and tools, they can support fine motor skills, language, early math and literacy, problem-solving, and imaginative play. They also fit naturally with UDL by giving children different ways to engage, explore, and participate. You can adapt the ideas on this page to match your children’s interests, developmental levels, and sensory needs.

Dinosaur Sensory Bin

Fill a bin with rice and a variety of plastic dinosaurs for children to explore, hide, uncover, sort, and compare. This open-ended activity supports vocabulary, imaginative play, fine motor skills, and early science concepts such as size, features, and classification.

Sloth Story Sensory Bin

Pair a favorite sloth book with soft stuffed sloths for a simple story-based sensory experience. Children can retell parts of the story, act out ideas, describe the animals, and engage in imaginative play while building language and comprehension skills.

Frog Patterning Sensory Bin

Fill a bin with rice and colorful frogs for children to sort, match, and create patterns. Adding a visual pattern card gives children a model to follow while supporting color recognition, sequencing, fine motor skills, and early math concepts.

Train Sensory Bin

Add dry pasta and small trains for children to move, hide, discover, and pretend with. Pairing the bin with train-themed books encourages children to connect sensory play with stories while building vocabulary, fine motor skills, and imaginative play.

Ocean Animal Sensory Bin

Use colored rice and plastic ocean animals for children to explore, sort, compare, and create underwater scenes. This activity encourages imaginative play while building vocabulary, fine motor skills, and early science concepts related to ocean animals and habitats.

Play Dough Counting & Stamping Bin

Provide play dough, a rolling pin, picture stamps, and number cards for children to roll, stamp, count, and match. This activity combines sensory exploration with number recognition, one-to-one counting, fine motor development, and early math skills.

Alphabet Garden

Brown play dough, plastic flowers, and lettered leaves create a fun garden for matching uppercase and lowercase letters. Children can press, plant, match, and explore while building fine motor and early literacy skills.

Arctic Animal Sensory Bin

Add water, ice, and plastic penguins, whales, and seals for an icy animal adventure. Children can explore temperature, pretend play, animal vocabulary, and simple science concepts.

Shape Sorting Rice Bin

Hide colorful shapes in a bin of rice for children to find, name, match, and sort. This activity supports shape recognition, color identification, fine motor skills, and early math concepts.

Water Play Sensory Bin

Fill a tub with water, bubbles, cups, scoops, funnels, and floating toys. Children can pour, scoop, squeeze, and experiment while developing coordination, problem-solving, and an understanding of cause and effect.

Dinosaur Dig

Hide plastic dinosaur eggs and bones in sand and add scoops or brushes for excavation. Children can dig, uncover, compare, and pretend to be paleontologists while practicing fine motor skills, vocabulary, and imaginative play.

Cutting and Creating Bin

Provide construction paper, crayons, and child-safe scissors for open-ended creating. Children can cut, draw, tear, and design while strengthening hand muscles, creativity, and fine motor skills.
